Different, but give it a chance
Score: 7
My first exposure to the new album was at a damn near sold out show at the Metro here in Chicago. I paid $20 for 20 minutes of music, over half of which was new material off this album. I enjoyed what I later discovered to be Suped Up Vinyl and Shining On, but wasn't too thrilled at the new dub aspect. They did play LAX -which was the saving factor- but it still was a let down.
However, after I got my hands on the album and checked it out, I definitely do enjoy it. It's an artist's right to branch off and experiment with new styles, even if you might not necessarily agree with it.
If it's not your thing, thats cool. Just don't hate 'em for trying.

RE: Peter
Score: 8
Dude, you're making the mistake that I hear a lot of bands make that never get anywhere. Don't make music to sound like a certain genre. If you have to go into writing your music w/ the ultimate goal of sounding like a ska band and being a "ska ska ska" band then all your songs are gonna end up being and sounding the same. And boring. I love ska, don't get me wrong, but that mentality is a dangerous one.
Expand yo mind, joe!

Just not my thing
Score: 5
Maybe it's just not my thing, but I was disappointed with this one. RBF has definitely gone in a different direction with their music. It's much heavier, less horns, fewer upstrokes... It's started to grow on me, but I still find myself skipping through a lot.

Classic
Score: 8
The Fish Reel Big was one of the first ska bands that I was introduced to back in early high school. And I loved it: The horns, the upstrokes, the catchy rhythms... school would get to be such a grind -same shit day in and day out- until I got on the train and just lost myself in it. This album and Cheer up helped define my high school experience.
Sell Out!
