the third in the trilogy is still alright

Score: 6
the bosstones released three cd's in three years. the third wave of ska was nearing its peak, and these guys were doing what they could to make it last. doing a cd each year has gotta tire you out, especially in terms of writing. their songs still tell great stories of rough neighborhoods, clean-dressed killers and metaphors for things loved and lost, but they've lost a bit of the bounce that's usually in their step. the song transitions throughout the album feel a bit disjointed. they start off strong with "kinder words," the horns punching through the distorted guitar line. about halfway through the album, the song "dollar and a dream" breaks the ballad barrier. the songs after it are still good, but you don't really want to listen to them. an okay album, but definitely not in my top 20.

mad style

Score: 8
i agree with kyle. to be honest, though, i don't think "the impression that i get" was the best song on the cd. such is the music industry, however. use the somewhat good catchy song to lure them in and hear greats like "royal oil," "noise brigade," and the very hardcore "1-2-8." the bosstones run the gamut for style, and pull it off with style.

a well-balanced fish journey

Score: 7
sure, the fish isn't as "ska" as they used to be. ska is as ska as it used to be. people are getting confused between balance and variety, it seems. sure, they've got a couple throws from outta left field, what with covering "new york, new york," as well as their original songs "rock 'n roll is bitchin" and "drunk again." i say the fish is maturing, which is necessary for a band at several points in their career. now, this is coming from a person who hasn't heard the entirety of "we're not happy til you're not happy," so i'm not entirely sure if their next step in maturing after "cheer up" was in a good direction. fact is, the songs are catchy, and they'll get you dancing. no masterpiece, but it wasn't as terrible as peter said it was.
